Welcome to the website of Alcvin Ryuzen Ramos!
Canada's first and only Dai Shihan, master of shakuhachi!
Mission
I am dedicated to the ultimate goal of spreading the history, culture,
and art of playing the Shakuhachi, Japan's most well-known vertical
bamboo flute. My mandate is to educate the public about Japanese
musical arts focussing on shakuhachi and share its beauty for the
enrichment of the entire community.
By providing the public with the highest quality instruction in shakuhachi
and shakuhachi products, I am commited to educating the public about
the process of becoming a shakuhachi player in the deepest sense through
offering private lessons, retreats at my retreat centre, Bamboo-In, organizing
special events for shakuhachi, and pilgrimages to Japan to harvest bamboo,
visit komuso temples, take lessons with the masters, and have concerts.
Other shakuhachi organizations that I have affliation with are:
* The Shakuhachi Society of British Columbia
* Kokusai Shakuhachi Kenshukan
* Zensabo
* Yoshinobu Taniguchi
My other services include:
* Internet Shakuhachi lessons using webcam via Skype. (See profiles of my students.)
* I import and distribute fine-crafted, traditional shakuhachi (jinashi and ji-ari) bamboo
flutes from Japan made by Yamaguchi Shugtesu, Kobayashi Ichijo, and others. Please
inquire for availability of stock.
* I offer a certification program for those aspiring to be professional shakuhachi teachers and performers.
* Concerts and performances of traditional and contemporary shakuhachi music.
(See some of my current projects.)
* Lectures demonstrations at various educational levels from elementary to university level.

The Germany "Drum Spirits" tour with Uzume Taiko went great.
Now I'm back home rehearsing with a few new groups:
IDAE (Isshin Denshin Atmospheric Ensemble) with Kozue Matsumoto
and Kirk Watson, and with Eien Hunter Ishikawa. Hopefully we'll get
lots of gigs next year! Also started back making flutes again. Please
inquire for availability.
