“An alchemy of spiritual music that fuses ancient instruments and musical traditions from around the world with unique, modern instrumental inventions”
What do Japanese monks, Australian Aborigines,
African Shamans, Indian traditional musicians,
and mad scientists have in common? Absolutely
nothing! Except for the fact that they have all
contributed to the musical inspiration behind the
band Dharmakasa!
Dharmakasa is an incredibly unique collaboration
between two widely divergent Asian musicians.
Alcvin Ramos is a recognized shihan (master) of the
Japanese shakuhachi flute, who has also studied
the didgeridoo with Australian Aborigines. Andrew
Kim is a mad inventor of stringed instruments with
a background in both Indian sitar and African music
(performing with the Zimbabwean band Feso).
Through their groundbreaking vision, they have
created their own extraordinary sound that combines
Asian , African, Australian, and Indian musical styles
with some very modern elements. Alcvin performs
on the shakuhachi, didgeridoo, and various wind
instruments. Andrew performs on his self made
inventions, the Indian guitar (a sitar/electric guitar
hybrid), the Nine Stringed Violin, and the Cellimba (a
miniature cello/African kalimba hybrid).
Dharmakasa is available as either a duet or a quartet. Asthe quartet, they are joined by bass player extraordinaire, Cameron Hood and percussion powerhouse, Shambunata.
These two members of Dharmakasa add a driving
rhythmic infectious groove element that adds fuel to the intensity of the music.

At a Dharmakasa performance, you might meditate,
but you definitely won’t fall asleep. This is a truly
unique group that is not to be missed!
“…likely to please a wide variety of listeners. The music’s slow droning qualities will appeal to devotees of New Age spirituality; its simplicity will speak to folk music fans; the other-worldly sounds of Kim’s instruments will attract the experimentally minded; and the improvisational spirit of both musicians’ playing will draw those whose tastes run to jazz.” --- Alex Varty - Georgia Straight
